The Witch of Évora was a lady in a comfortable social situation. She had money from performing her magical services but, mindful of the spirit of medieval times, she did not flaunt wealth. She dressed modestly. It was her way of avoiding confrontation with the authorities. The pagan Moorish woman was, at the same time, a devout Christian: she made the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, went to the Cathedral of Braga to pay promises... she was not a heretic.
